In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island. George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property - complete with boathouse and swimming pool - and the price were too good to pass up.
Twenty-eight days later, the entire Lutz family fled in terror.
This is the spellbinding, best-selling, true story that gripped the nation - the story of a house possessed by evil spirits, haunted by psychic phenomena almost too terrible to describe.
Jay Anson began as a copy boy on the New York Evening Journal in 1937 and later worked in advertising and publicity. With more than 500 documentary scripts for television to his credit, he was associated with Professional Films, Inc. He died in 1980.

Based off the reviews I was expecting to be terrified upon reading this book. It got no such reaction from me... I think it was the way that it was written that took the horror factor out of it. It was written in a very fact by fact manner. The tone spoke to me like this: "this happened and later on this happened, while somewhere else this other thing happened. It was quite shocking!" Perhaps I am just biased against using exclamation points in narratives, but it came across rather comical when most chapters would end with an exclamation point. I had a hard time taking the book seriously. Also, the book just kind of ended... with zero closure. So the ghost follows them to the mother's house but what then? Since it's a "true" story, we know that they turned out okay but an epilogue that included those details would have been nice for those that aren't familiar with the story. I'll try watching the movie and give the book another go but I am very underwhelmed.
I loved horror, suspense, and anything to do with paranormal concepts. This book was a decent read. I would recommend. Don't expect it to be too scary. It is nicely written.
I lived in the area where this story took place, at the time it all happened. Truly scary story, made worse because these murders did take place. As to the why?, well some believe it was a story of possession, others believe this took place because of a mentally disturbed person. The truth? Who knows. There are so many strange things in this world. The book, however, is well worth reading, if you're into scary.
I read this book when I was a teenager and ordered it because I loaned this book to someone and they never returnedit. Anyway, I believe this story although some think it was just a hoax. George and Kathy Lutz passed a lie detector test and I have seen them in interviews and they really seemed to me as very sincere. There is no way that someone would flee their own home and leave most of their belongings behind like they did without good reason. I would have done the same thing if that living horror happened to me. I have experienced strange phenomenal things in the past and it isnot pleasant whatsoever. No one knows how terrifying it can be unless they have experienced it. This book is also very well written too.
This is a gruesome well written encounter of what actually happened according to the Lutz family. This book is a page turner. I was so scared to turn to the next page knowing this stuff really happened to this family but I couldn't help myself. It just draws you in! I'm so glad they decided to tell their own story on what happened to them in that house. My hat goes off to them on how long they stayed there! If it were me, I would have left after the first week! I had been waiting forever for this book to get re-published and I finally found it on Amazon.com. They never fail to amaze me on the books they keep in stock! This is a great read and the author, Jay Anson wrote the story extremely well. I love to read horror books and I own the entire collection of the Amityville movies. This is a must buy for anyone that likes to be scared when reading any book!
Just recently I read the Amityville Horror, I have seen the movies (both the origial and the remake that came out last year). I have to say that both movies were good and both had different versions, but not even the movies compare to the real horror of the book. The original book was very hard to find for a long time, finally I brought it use and read it for the first time just before the new remake came out. I am not the type of person who gets frighten easliy, there have been a few books and movies that have (The Exorcist, Night of the Living Dead as for movies and for books, Demonologist by Ed and Lorraine Warren, Beware of the Night and this book). I love to read and if the book catches my attention it is hard for me to put down, however this book did, it took me 2 weeks to finish reading it, I had to keep putting it down. I remember as a kid and seeing this story about this haunted house on the show called "That's incredible" and remember hearing about the pig with red eyes etc... Then a few years back I saw the original movie and that scare me a bit, then I brought this book called the "The Demonlogist" by Ed and Lorraine Warren and they had gone to the house and investigated the paranormal. However, I was very excited to be able to finally reading this book for the first time, and I was not disappointed at all. I went to see the remake and believe me both movies have nothing to do with the book at all. It's no wonder why Mr. Lutz is suing MGM for the remake. The original tends too a little not all and the Remake, has nothing to do with the book or with the Lutz family at all. Harry the dog was not butchered by George Lutz, in the remake you see Ryan Reynolds hatch the poor dog, nor does the little girl climb on the roof and jump or that the kids father is dead.If you are interested in finding out the truth to what happen to the Lutz family the 28 days they were living in their house, read the book, don't go by what the movies states. The only thing that the both the movies and the book have in common is that yes Ronnie De Feo shot his family to death, the Lutz moved in the house a year later and that only 28 days later they fled. And Jodi is not a little girl (remake) it's the pig with the red eyes. The Book outdones both movies.A MUST read for anyone who is interested in the paranormal.
I enjoyed this book even though it is entirely fictional (aside from the Defeo murders, that is the only part of the book based on a true story). The rest of the book is an admitted hoax but is, nevertheless, an interesting read. As is usually the case, the book is much better than the movies. If you are interested in haunted houses or other creepy paranormal fiction, this is worth the few dollars it costs.
Written similarly to a journal entry, day by day, but follows multiple sides of the story. Scary to imagine all this happening to you in your home!
